Frequently, we face situations in which we don’t understand why they are happening and we regularly do not know how to pray in those times. It is in these times that the Holy Spirit will come along side and intercede through us. When this happens, God’s infinite power is introduced into the situation. Romans 8:26-27 tells us: “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will.”
Paul speaks of two divine intercessors in his epistles: the Holy Spirit and Jesus Christ. In heaven, while in the presence of God, Jesus intercedes on our behalf and here on earth, the Holy Spirit intercedes within and through followers of Christ. In our weakness, Paul is comparing the inability to know what to pray for to carrying a heavy load. It is during these times that when we boldly pray, the Holy Spirit comes to our aid & bears the burden. We are all intercessors when we plead for God’s favor on behalf of others. The source of life lives in us and although we do not generate life, we release, through prayer, Him who does. When we pray, the Holy Spirit will come upon us and the power of the Most High will overshadow us.
Our prayers release the Holy Spirit to move into situations where His power can bring forth new life. What we must never forget is that intercession is warfare and one of the quickest ways to lose a battle is through ignorance. Satan’s tactics have been costly to the church because he operates with plans, plots, schemes and devices aimed at our destruction. It is true that God allows everything to happen and that He established sowing and reaping, cause and effect, and that He gave us free will to decide. This is not the problem; the real issue is that Satan too understands these laws and he uses them to his advantage whenever he can. Our complacency has cost us prayer in schools, legalized abortions, gay marriage and the list goes on. We must not kid ourselves; we are engaged in battle and we are all soldiers in the Lord’s army. We are to tread upon Satan and his dominions because when Christ lives in us, we have the authority to bind and loose any agent of darkness. Satan used to have the tactical advantage in my life when his plans and schemes we hidden from me. Now, my devotion to Christ drives my very being. It is not so much important how we pray, but that we pray. We must remember in our spiritual warfare, we are not trying to defeat the devil; he is already defeated. However, what Christ has already accomplished at Calvary, we must enforce through faith and by using the spiritual weapons bestowed to us. We must rise up, seize, and take hold of the victory by force; it is our inheritance in Christ that we fight for.
