Have you ever noticed how life can feel like a hurricane?
The winds begin to pick up. The skies darken. The pressure changes. Suddenly, circumstances you never saw coming start shaking things you thought were secure. Relationships get strained. Health challenges emerge. Finances tighten. Dreams get delayed.
Then something strange happens.
For a brief moment, everything gets calm.
The clouds part. The winds stop howling. The sun peeks through.
You think, “Maybe the storm is over.”
But if you’ve ever studied hurricanes, you know that sometimes you’re not out of the storm at all. You’re simply in the eye.
The most dangerous part may still be coming.
I think many of us have experienced seasons like that spiritually. We survive a difficult battle and begin to dream again. We start believing again. We feel hope rising again. Then suddenly another challenge appears on the horizon.
Another setback.
Another disappointment.
Another delay.
And we find ourselves wondering, “God, why does it feel like every time I start moving forward, another storm hits?”
That is often the exact moment when we must refuse to let go of the dream God placed in our hearts.
Scripture is filled with people who experienced that tension.
Joseph received a dream from God, but before he ever saw its fulfillment, he was betrayed by his brothers, thrown into a pit, sold into slavery, falsely accused, and forgotten in prison.
David was anointed king while still a shepherd boy, yet he spent years running for his life before ever sitting on the throne.
Abraham received a promise from God but waited decades before holding the son he had been promised.
The dream came first.
The storm came second.
The fulfillment came later.
Too often we assume that if opposition shows up, we must be heading in the wrong direction. But sometimes opposition is evidence that you’re heading exactly where God wants you to go.
The enemy does not waste time attacking people who have given up.
He targets people who still believe.
He targets people who still hope.
He targets people who still dream.
That is why we cannot judge God’s faithfulness by the weather surrounding us.
Storms come.
Winds blow.
Rain falls.
But God’s promises remain.
Recently, I was watching Eye of the Storm on HBO, and one particular story stayed with me long after the credits rolled.
A powerful tornado tore through a community, leaving destruction everywhere. Homes were damaged. Buildings were reduced to rubble. Lives were forever changed.
In the middle of the devastation was a horse named Blondie.
As the storm ripped through the property, a barn collapsed on top of her. A massive feeding trough weighing nearly a thousand pounds pinned her beneath the wreckage.
When rescuers finally reached Blondie, things looked hopeless.
She appeared lifeless.
She wasn’t breathing.
There was no movement.
No sign of life.
Six men worked together to lift the enormous trough. As they struggled to free her, emotions ran high because everyone assumed the worst.
Then something incredible happened.
The moment the weight was removed, Blondie suddenly stood up.
Just stood up.
As if life had rushed back into her body.
The people around her were stunned.
I was sitting on my couch stunned.
I felt myself getting emotional as I watched the scene unfold.
For several moments it appeared the story was over.
The circumstances looked final.
The weight seemed too great.
The damage seemed too severe.
Yet somehow life remained.
As I watched, I couldn’t help but think about how many people feel exactly like Blondie today.
Maybe you’re carrying a weight that feels unbearable.
Maybe disappointment has pinned you down.
Maybe grief has trapped you.
Maybe fear has convinced you that your best days are behind you.
Maybe you’ve stopped dreaming because every time you start hoping again, another storm seems to arrive.
But here’s what I want to remind you today:
Just because you’re under pressure doesn’t mean you’re defeated.
Just because you’re trapped doesn’t mean you’re abandoned.
Just because you cannot see a way forward doesn’t mean God has stopped working.
God specializes in bringing life where others see only loss.
He specializes in resurrection.
He specializes in impossible situations.
He specializes in moments when everyone else says, “It’s over.”
Psalm 91 reminds us that God’s hand of protection rests upon His people.
That does not mean we will never face storms.
It means storms do not get the final word.
Sometimes God’s protection looks different than we expect.
Sometimes He protects us by removing the storm.
Sometimes He protects us by strengthening us in the middle of it.
Sometimes He protects us by preserving the dream until the appointed time.
Joseph’s dream survived the pit.
David’s calling survived the wilderness.
Daniel’s purpose survived the lions’ den.
Paul’s ministry survived shipwrecks.
Jesus’ mission survived the cross.
And your dream can survive this season too.
One of the greatest dangers during difficult seasons is allowing temporary circumstances to create permanent conclusions.
We begin saying things like:
“It will never happen.”
“I missed my opportunity.”
“I’m too old.”
“I’ve failed too many times.”
“The damage is too great.”
But God is not limited by what limits us.
He sees possibilities where we see obstacles.
He sees purpose where we see pain.
He sees restoration where we see ruin.
The dream God planted inside you may have experienced delays, but delays are not denials.
You may be in the middle of the storm right now.
You may feel like the winds have returned after a brief season of calm.
You may feel exhausted from fighting battle after battle.
Keep believing.
Keep trusting.
Keep praying.
Keep moving forward.
Keep dreaming.
The same God who carried you through previous storms will carry you through this one.
The same God who protected you before is protecting you now.
The same God who opened doors in the past can open new doors in your future.
Do not let today’s storm talk you out of tomorrow’s promise.
The dream is still alive.
The calling is still intact.
The purpose is still unfolding.
And even if you feel buried beneath the weight of life’s circumstances, remember Blondie.
Everyone thought the story was over.
The weight seemed too heavy.
The situation seemed impossible.
Yet life was still there.
And perhaps that is exactly what God wants you to remember today.
There is still life in you.
There is still purpose in you.
There is still hope for you.
There is still a future waiting for you.
Hold on to the dream.
The storm will not last forever.
Prayer:
Father, thank You that Your promises are greater than any storm we face. When circumstances try to convince us to give up, help us hold tightly to the dreams You have placed in our hearts. Remind us that delays are not denials and that opposition does not mean abandonment. Strengthen those who feel weary, discouraged, or trapped beneath the weight of life’s challenges. Let Your peace calm anxious hearts and let Your hope rise above every fear. Help us trust Your timing, rely on Your protection, and believe that You are still working even when we cannot see it. Thank You for being our refuge, our strength, and our ever-present help in times of trouble. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
