Scriptures: Haggai 1:1-15, Revelations 2:18-29, Matthew 23:27-39
As we reflect on Haggai 1:1-15, Revelation 2:18-29, and Matthew 23:27-39, a central theme emerges: God calls His people to live with authentic devotion, not hollow religiosity. In Haggai, God rebukes His people for prioritizing their comforts over rebuilding His temple. Their neglect reveals a misplaced focus. Similarly, in Revelation, Jesus addresses the church in Thyatira, commending their deeds but warning against tolerating sin. Finally, in Matthew, Jesus mourns the hypocrisy of the religious leaders, who appear righteous outwardly but harbor inner corruption.
These passages remind us of the necessity of aligning our hearts with God’s will during this Advent season. Just as the Israelites needed to rebuild the temple, we are called to examine the temples of our lives. Are we building on the foundation of Christ, or have we been distracted by lesser pursuits? Like the church in Thyatira, are we steadfast in love and faith yet tolerant of sin that weakens our witness? And, like the Pharisees, do we present an appearance of piety while neglecting the inward transformation the Spirit desires?
Reflect: Advent is a time to prepare our hearts for Christ’s coming, both as the baby in Bethlehem and the King who will return. Let us respond to His call to repentance, rejecting complacency and embracing lives marked by integrity and zeal for His kingdom.
Prayer: Lord, forgive us for neglecting Your will and tolerating sin in our lives. Help us rebuild our hearts as holy temples for Your presence. May our devotion be genuine, our love steadfast, and our faith unshaken. Prepare us to receive You anew this Advent season. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
