No Turning Back

“As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” Jesus replied, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” He said to another man, “Follow me.” But the man replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” Luke 9:57-59 (NIV)

I love the song, “I have decided to follow Jesus.” The words really paint the picture of what was going on in this story above as someone wants to follow Jesus, but is making excuses.

How many of us are actually following Jesus and how many of us are really asking Jesus to follow us? It comes down to a decision. Are we All in?

Recently, I was reading Mark Batterson’s book All In and he highlights the story of when Cortes’s fleet finally lands after their long voyage in Mexico. Now picture the crew after their perilous voyage just being thankful they made it across the dangerous sea, but now picture them watch their only shelter and way home go up in smoke. Cortes ordered their entire fleet be burned. What!!! Talk about taking away the decision to turn back! With the ships burned, there was no way but forward unless they wanted to swim home.

I think in our own walk with Christ we all have some ships that need to be burned so we won’t be tempted to turn back or go back to our old ways. “Though I may wonder, I still will follow. The world behind me, the cross before me. Though none go with me, still I will follow; no turning back, no turning back.” Will you decide to follow Jesus?
