This morning, as I held a warm cup of coffee and watched the first hints of sunlight stretch across the horizon, I thought about how much I love having a plan. There’s comfort in knowing the path ahead—what’s next, how I’ll get there, and what challenges I might face. Maybe you feel the same way. But if life has taught us anything, it’s this: our carefully written scripts rarely unfold the way we expect. Detours appear, prayers seem unanswered, and God often takes us down roads we never saw coming.
And let’s be honest—it’s unsettling. Frustrating, even. But here’s what I’ve been learning: God’s ways are not just different from ours—they’re infinitely higher. What feels confusing in the moment will one day reveal itself as part of His beautiful tapestry, woven with threads of grace, purpose, and promise. Trusting Him may stretch us, but it will never disappoint us.
God’s Ways Are Higher
Isaiah 55:8–9 reminds us of this truth:
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.
As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
That passage is both humbling and liberating. Humbling, because it reminds us we don’t know it all. Liberating, because we don’t have to. God sees the beginning and the end in one glance. He knows every detail of your journey—even the ones that feel like detours.
Just look at Joseph. Betrayed by his brothers, sold into slavery, thrown into prison—he must have wondered, Where is God in this? Yet every painful step moved him closer to the palace, where God positioned him to save a nation. The path wasn’t logical, but it was purposeful.
When Life Doesn’t Make Sense
Maybe you’ve prayed for healing and it hasn’t come. Maybe you’ve worked faithfully, yet watched someone else get the promotion. Maybe you’re waiting for a breakthrough that feels long overdue. Or maybe your heart is heavy from loss.
Here’s what you need to hold on to: delay is not denial. God doesn’t miss appointments. What feels like a pause is often preparation. Romans 8:28 reminds us that all things—not just the joyful, but the painful too—are working together for your good.
Trust Beyond Understanding
Proverbs 3:5–6 gives us the roadmap for peace:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
Our instinct is to analyze, fix, and control. But faith invites us to surrender. It’s saying, “Lord, I don’t get this, but I trust You anyway. I’ll follow even when the road is foggy.”
From the Ordinary to the Extraordinary
Think of the little boy with five loaves and two fish. In his hands, it was just lunch. In Jesus’ hands, it fed thousands. That’s what happens when you place your small offering—your time, your gifts, your faith—into God’s hands. He blesses, breaks, and multiplies it into more than enough.
Don’t discount your “little.” God delights in turning ordinary beginnings into extraordinary stories.
Practical Steps to Strengthen Trust
- Pause before you panic. Instead of spiraling, whisper: “God, I trust You.”
- Feed your faith. Read His Word, pray, and remind yourself of His past faithfulness.
- Release control. You don’t need all the answers—just the One who holds them.
- Shift your questions. Instead of asking “Why?” ask, “Lord, how are You using this?”
- Surround yourself with encouragers. Walk with people who will strengthen—not weaken—your faith.
The Blessing of Surrender
There’s a peace that comes when you stop clutching the wheel and let God steer. The road may still twist and turn, but you’ll never travel it alone.
Psalm 37:23–24 promises:
“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and he delights in his way.
Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the Lord upholds him with his hand.”
Friend, every detour, every delay, every disappointment is not wasted. One day, you’ll look back and see how each step carried you closer to your God-given purpose. His ways are not only higher—they are always better.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You that Your ways are higher, Your timing is perfect, and Your thoughts are always for my good. When I’m tempted to panic, teach me to pause and trust. When I feel weak, hold me up with Your hand. Remind me that nothing is wasted in Your plan and that every detail of my life is woven with purpose. I place my dreams, my struggles, and my future in Your hands, believing You will turn even the detours into destiny. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
