I remember moments in my life when I couldn’t see what God was doing. I was too caught up in the crowd of circumstances, too weighed down by doubts and limitations, and too distracted by what seemed impossible in front of me. Maybe you’ve been there too—feeling too small for the dream God placed in your heart, too weak for the battle ahead, or too late to step into the purpose He’s calling you toward.
That’s exactly where Zacchaeus found himself. He was a man who didn’t seem to measure up. Too short to see Jesus over the crowd. Too despised by his community to be welcomed at the front. Too broken by poor choices to imagine a better future. Yet, God had already prepared something for him—a tree planted long before he ever lived—that would give him the perspective he needed to see Jesus and experience a life-changing encounter.
Friend, that’s the hope for you today: God has already planted your tree.
The God Who Thinks Generations Ahead
Luke 19:3–4 tells us, “Zacchaeus tried to get a look at Jesus, but he was too short to see over the crowd. So, he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree beside the road, for Jesus was going to pass that way.”
That tree wasn’t an accident. Sycamore trees can live for hundreds of years. Long before Zacchaeus took his first breath, God planted a tree that would one day become his lifeline to grace. Think about that! Generations earlier, God had already mapped out a strategy for Zacchaeus to see Jesus clearly.
This reveals something powerful: God isn’t just working in your present moment—He’s been preparing blessings, opportunities, and connections for you long before you knew you’d need them. Before you cried your first tear, before you faced your first setback, and before you prayed your first desperate prayer, God was already lining up a “tree” for you.
Your Tree Is Waiting
Maybe today you’re facing obstacles that feel insurmountable. You wonder how you’ll overcome the rejection, the diagnosis, the financial burden, or the disappointment. It feels like the crowd is too tall and you’re too small.
But here’s the good news: your tree is already waiting. That opportunity, that open door, that breakthrough—it’s already planted. You may not see it yet, but God has placed provision along your path.
Think about the Israelites wandering in the wilderness. Before they left Egypt, God had already prepared quail to fall from heaven and water to flow from rocks (Exodus 16:13, Exodus 17:6). Before Elijah faced famine, God had already spoken to ravens to bring him bread (1 Kings 17:4–6). Before Mary gave birth to Jesus, God had already chosen a manger in Bethlehem (Luke 2:7).
In the same way, your tree is positioned. At the right moment, God will bring you to the right place to see what you couldn’t see before.
Trust the Timing
Here’s the part that challenges us: trees don’t grow overnight. That sycamore tree had been planted decades, maybe centuries before Zacchaeus climbed it. Which means that God’s preparation often happens long before our realization.
We live in a “microwave” culture—we want instant answers, quick fixes, and fast promotions. But God is a “slow cooker” God. He takes His time, because He knows the beauty of timing. Scripture reminds us in Ecclesiastes 3:11, “He has made everything beautiful in its time.”
What looks like a delay in your life is often divine preparation. That unanswered prayer may be God making sure the tree is strong enough for you to climb when you need it most.
From Curiosity to Transformation
Notice something about Zacchaeus: he only climbed the tree out of curiosity. He wanted to “get a look” at Jesus. But that small step of curiosity led to the biggest transformation of his life. Jesus looked up, called him by name, and said, “Zacchaeus! Quick, come down! I must be a guest in your home today” (Luke 19:5).
What started as curiosity ended with salvation. Zacchaeus experienced forgiveness, purpose, and a brand-new future.
This teaches us something important: don’t dismiss small steps. That simple act of showing up at church, opening your Bible, or whispering a prayer might be the very thing God uses to change your life forever. The tree you climb today in faith may position you for a miracle tomorrow.
God Has Already Lined It Up
Friend, you don’t have to manipulate your way into your destiny. You don’t have to scheme, stress, or strive for what God has already promised. He’s already lined up the resources, the people, and the opportunities you’ll need. Psalm 37:23 says, “The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.”
Rest in this truth: you are not forgotten. You are not behind schedule. You are not overlooked. The same God who planted a tree for Zacchaeus has planted provision for you.
A Practical Encouragement for Today
Here are three ways to live with confidence that your tree is already planted:
- Trust God’s Timing – Even when it feels delayed, God is never late. His timing is perfect.
- Take Small Steps of Faith – Climb your “tree.” Do what you can with what you have, and God will meet you there.
- Look for Jesus in the Crowd – Don’t let distractions or discouragement block your view. Fix your eyes on Him, and He’ll give you a fresh perspective.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for being so strategic, so intentional, and so loving that You planted “trees” for me long before I knew I’d need them. Thank You for opening doors, placing the right people in my path, and aligning blessings that I could never earn on my own. Help me to trust Your timing, to take steps of faith, and to keep my eyes fixed on Jesus even when the crowd seems overwhelming. I believe that my tree is already planted, my steps are already ordered, and my future is secure in You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
