Have you ever tried to drive forward while staring at the rearview mirror? It doesn’t take long before you drift, stumble, or crash. That little mirror is there for brief glances, not for guiding your journey. There’s a reason your rearview mirror is small but your windshield is wide—because where you’re going matters far more than where you’ve been.
Life works the same way. When we keep looking back—whether at regrets, old hurts, or even past comforts—we can’t fully embrace the new future God has prepared for us. And when we let fear of the future or guilt from the past consume us, we miss the beauty of today. The truth is simple but sobering: you can’t step into your destiny if you’re chained to your history, and you can’t enjoy the present if you’re trapped in yesterday or worried about tomorrow.
The story of Lot’s wife is one of Scripture’s clearest warnings about the danger of looking back. In Genesis 19, God sent angels to rescue Lot and his family from Sodom, a city overflowing with sin and destruction. The command was urgent: “Flee for your lives! Don’t look back… Flee to the mountains or you will be swept away!” (Genesis 19:17). Yet in a single moment of hesitation, Lot’s wife turned back—and instantly became a pillar of salt (Genesis 19:26).
Her backward glance wasn’t just curiosity—it revealed where her heart truly was. Though her feet were pointed toward freedom, her heart was still tied to what she left behind. That split loyalty cost her everything. Her story still speaks today: God’s deliverance always calls us forward, never backward.
1. Trust God’s Plan Without Hesitation
When God says move, He means it. The unknown may feel intimidating, but His plan is always better than the past we’re tempted to cling to. Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
2. Let Go of the Past
The past can feel familiar—even when it’s painful. But Paul gives us a new way to live: “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal…” (Philippians 3:13–14). You can’t drive forward if your eyes stay fixed on the mirror. Your future in Christ is always greater than your past.
3. Live Fully in Today
Jesus said, “Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own” (Matthew 6:34). Fear of the future and shame or guilt from the past rob us of the only time we’re guaranteed—the present. God gives us today as a gift. When we keep our eyes on Him, we can live in freedom, joy, and purpose right where we are.
4. Obey God Completely
Lot’s wife didn’t just glance—she disobeyed. Jesus Himself gave us the warning: “Remember Lot’s wife! Whoever tries to keep their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life will preserve it” (Luke 17:32–33). Halfway obedience is still disobedience.
5. Guard Against Spiritual Complacency
God is always doing a new thing. Isaiah 43:18–19 declares: “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing!” Looking back will always keep you from looking ahead.
Moving Forward with Faith
Lot’s wife shows us that our direction matters more than our intention. You can’t walk into God’s promises while staring at yesterday. But the good news is this: God never asks you to let go of something without giving you something better. Out of destruction into life. Out of sorrow into joy. Out of bondage into freedom.
So, lift your eyes forward. Your rearview mirror is small for a reason—but your windshield is wide. Don’t let fear of tomorrow or guilt of yesterday rob you of today. Keep your gaze fixed on Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of your faith (Hebrews 12:2). The best is not behind you—it’s ahead in Him, and it starts by living fully in this present moment.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for reminding me that my rearview mirror is small for a reason—because You have so much more ahead. Help me to live fully in today without being robbed by fear of the future or guilt from the past. Teach me to trust You without hesitation, obey You completely, and release everything that ties me to yesterday. Fix my eyes on Jesus, and give me courage to step forward into the new thing You are doing in my life.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
