In a world saturated with noise, unrest, and uncertainty, our hearts ache for something steady. We crave a glimpse of goodness that isn’t shaken by headlines or hollowed by heartache. We long for proof that God is still here—still providing, still listening, still working wonders even when we don’t see it.
And He is.
Scripture is brimming with stories of God’s relentless kindness—often revealed not in mountaintop miracles, but in quiet acts of courage that change the course of history. One of the most powerful is found in the life of Jochebed, the mother of Moses. Her story is not just about survival in dark times—it’s about faith that floats in a river of fear and a God whose goodness overflows in the most impossible places.
Goodness in the Midst of Crisis
Imagine giving birth to a child under a government decree that guarantees his death. That was Jochebed’s reality. Pharaoh, threatened by the rising numbers of Hebrew slaves, ordered every newborn Hebrew boy to be drowned in the Nile (Exodus 1:22). It was a genocide masked as policy. Yet, right in the middle of this madness, God planted a seed of destiny.
When Jochebed looked at her baby, she didn’t just see her son—she saw something divinely different. The Bible says he was “no ordinary child” (Exodus 2:2, NIV). This wasn’t wishful thinking. It was faith in the face of terror.
For three months, she hid him—every creak in the floor, every cry in the night, a threat to his life. But when she could hide him no longer, she didn’t panic. She prepared. She made a basket, sealed it with tar and pitch, and entrusted him to the very river meant for his death. What the enemy meant as a grave became the channel for God’s greatest plan.
The River Was Never Random
Jochebed had no idea what would happen next. But God did.
At the exact moment her tiny ark bobbed into the reeds, Pharaoh’s daughter “happened” to be bathing nearby (Exodus 2:5). She noticed the basket, heard the cries, and was moved with compassion. This was not coincidence—it was divine choreography.
God doesn’t do random. He does right on time.
When we entrust our fears, our futures, and our families into His hands, God meets our faith with precision. He aligns people, places, and purposes in ways we couldn’t orchestrate on our best day. Jochebed thought she was letting go, but heaven was taking over.
Provision You Couldn’t Plan
Just when the story seems complete, God does what only He can—He adds overflow. Moses’ sister Miriam, waiting nearby, courageously offers a solution: “Shall I go and get a Hebrew woman to nurse the baby for you?” (Exodus 2:7).
Permission granted. And who does she bring? Jochebed. The very mother who released her child into the Nile now holds him again—this time protected, honored, and even paid to care for him (Exodus 2:9).
Who but God writes stories like this?
When we surrender what’s most precious, God doesn’t just give it back. He gives it back better. Jochebed let go in faith—and found herself holding a miracle.
A Bigger Story Than We Can See
Jochebed didn’t know Moses would become a deliverer. She didn’t see Mount Sinai in her vision. She simply believed God would take care of her baby. And that faith—rooted in trust, not in outcome—changed the course of a nation.
Sometimes we don’t get to see the full picture. Sometimes, like Jochebed, we just obey. But obedience has a ripple effect. The basket you release today might carry a leader, a revival, or a legacy tomorrow.
God’s goodness doesn’t stop with us—it multiplies through us. He blesses us so we can be a blessing. He preserves us to participate in His redemptive story. And He often starts that story at the very point where we surrender control.
Your Basket Moment
Maybe you’re in your own “basket moment” right now. Maybe you’re being asked to trust God with something—or someone—precious. It feels risky. Painful. Even unfair. But what if the very river that scares you is the one God plans to use to carry your promise?
Friend, you are not alone in the letting go. The same God who saw Jochebed’s tears sees yours. He knows what you’ve risked in faith. He knows how much it cost you to trust Him. And He will not let your obedience go unnoticed.
He’s not just preserving your promise—He’s positioning it.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for being the God who sees, who hears, and who always acts with purpose. Just like You did for Jochebed, I believe You are working behind the scenes in my life, weaving together a story I can’t yet see. Help me to trust You when it’s hardest to let go. Give me the courage to release what I can’t control and the faith to believe that Your goodness will guide what I’ve placed in Your hands. May my story be a testimony of Your perfect timing, faithful provision, and unfailing love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
