In the hustle and bustle of daily life, it’s easy to become consumed by our own needs, challenges, and desires. Yet, as believers, we are called to a higher standard of living—a life marked by generosity, kindness, and selflessness. We are meant to be fountains, not drains. A fountain overflows, nourishing and refreshing everything around it. A drain, on the other hand, pulls everything inward, leaving nothing behind.
The apostle Paul captures this idea beautifully in Galatians 5, where he writes about living by the Spirit. He contrasts the works of the flesh with the fruit of the Spirit, showing us what it means to live a life that pours out love, joy, and peace to others.
In Galatians 5:13-14, Paul writes: “You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”
This passage reminds us that our freedom in Christ is not a license for self-indulgence. Instead, it’s an opportunity to serve others with humility and love. Being a fountain means embracing this call to selflessness, using the gifts and blessings we’ve received to uplift those around us.
Paul goes on to describe the fruit of the Spirit in verses 22-23: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”
These qualities are evidence of a life that overflows with God’s presence. When we allow the Holy Spirit to work in us, we become fountains of these virtues, spreading them to everyone we encounter.
To be a fountain is to live a life of abundance—not material abundance, but spiritual abundance. It means:
- Loving Generously: Love isn’t just a feeling; it’s an action. Being a fountain means showing love in practical ways—a kind word, a helping hand, or simply being present for someone in need.
- Sharing Joy: Joy is contagious. When we live with joy rooted in Christ, we inspire others to find that same joy, even in difficult circumstances.
- Promoting Peace: In a world full of conflict and division, fountains bring calm and reconciliation. We can be peacemakers in our families, workplaces, and communities.
A drain mentality is one of constant consumption. It’s characterized by self-centeredness, greed, and negativity. Drains take without giving back, leaving others feeling depleted. To avoid this, we must:
- Guard Against Selfishness: Regularly examine your motives and actions. Are you focused solely on your own gain, or are you seeking to bless others?
- Stay Connected to the Source: A fountain can only flow if it’s connected to a water source. For us, that source is God. Spend time in prayer, worship, and Scripture to stay spiritually replenished.
- Practice Gratitude: Gratitude shifts our focus from what we lack to what we have. A grateful heart is more likely to give generously.
When we choose to be fountains, the impact extends far beyond ourselves. Just as a single drop in a pool creates ripples, our acts of kindness and love can inspire others to do the same. Together, we can create a world where giving and serving become the norm.
So today, ask yourself: Am I a fountain or a drain? How can I pour into someone’s life? Remember, the life of a fountain is a life of joy, purpose, and fulfillment. As Paul urges in Galatians 5:25, “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” Let’s walk in the Spirit and overflow with His goodness, blessing everyone around us. I hope this speaks to you, and I pray you have a blessed day!
