The crucifixion of Jesus Christ is the most powerful act of love and redemption in history. His death on the cross, followed by His glorious resurrection and ascension, signifies the ultimate victory over sin and death. But what happened in the time between His death and resurrection? This question has intrigued theologians and believers for centuries, and Scripture offers profound insights that inspire hope and confidence in our faith.
When Jesus breathed His last, He declared, “It is finished” (John 19:30). This was not a cry of defeat, but a victorious proclamation—the mission to redeem humanity was completed! Sin’s debt was paid in full. But His spirit did not simply rest; He descended into the depths of the earth, often referred to as “Hades” or “Sheol,” to accomplish something extraordinary. This act is sometimes called the “Harrowing of Hell.”
The Apostle Peter sheds light on this mystery: “For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. After being made alive, he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits…” (1 Peter 3:18-19, NIV).
Imagine the scene: Jesus, in His resurrected power, descending into the realm of the dead, proclaiming His victory over sin, death, and the grave. The prophecy of Psalm 16:10 was fulfilled: “You will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful one see decay.” Jesus was not bound by death—He was breaking its chains!
In Revelation 1:18, Jesus Himself declares, “I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.” What an incredible truth! Our Savior did not merely endure death—He conquered it. He took the keys, meaning He has full authority over life and death. No power of darkness can stand against Him!
On the third day, the world changed forever. Jesus rose from the grave, shattering the grip of sin and death. This is the foundation of our faith, the cornerstone of our hope. The Apostle Paul exclaims in 1 Corinthians 15:55-57:
“Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
The resurrection is not just an event in history—it is the defining truth that gives us life today! Because He lives, we have hope. Because He rose, we have victory. Death is not the end for those who belong to Christ; it is merely the beginning of eternity with Him.
Forty days after His resurrection, Jesus ascended into heaven. Acts 1:9 describes this awe-inspiring moment: “After He said this, He was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid Him from their sight.” He returned to His heavenly throne, where He now intercedes for us (Hebrews 7:25), ensuring that we are never alone. And He did not leave us without help—He sent the Holy Spirit to empower us (Acts 2:1-4), to guide us, and to fill us with His presence.
Before ascending, Jesus gave His disciples—and us—the Great Commission: “Go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). This mission continues today. We are called to share the good news, to declare His victory, and to live boldly in the power of His resurrection. Our ultimate mission is to grow God’s family.
Jesus’ journey after His death—His descent to Hades, His resurrection, and His ascension—offers us profound assurance. He triumphed over death so that we can live free. No longer do we have to fear sin’s grip, death’s finality, or the enemy’s lies. He has broken every chain!
Revelation 21:4 gives us this glorious promise: “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” Because of Jesus, our future is secure, our hope is unshakable, and our lives are victorious!
So today, hold your head high. You serve a risen King! He holds the keys to death and Hades, ensuring that nothing—not even death—can separate you from His love (Romans 8:38-39). May this truth empower you to live with courage, joy, and an unwavering faith. Jesus has won the victory, and because of Him, so have you!
Be encouraged, walk in His power, and share the good news—He is risen indeed! I hope this speaks to you, and I pray you have a blessed day!
