One of the most remarkable aspects of Jesus’ ministry was not just what He did, but how He did it. His miracles, teachings, and sacrificial love are unparalleled, but there is a quieter, often overlooked quality that defined His time on earth: Jesus was never in a rush. He walked slowly through the crowd, fully present with the people He encountered, showing us the profound importance of the ministry of presence.
In the Gospels, Jesus’ interactions reflect a deliberate pace, rooted in compassion and attentiveness. Whether He was on His way to heal Jairus’ daughter, stopping to engage with a woman who had suffered for twelve years (Mark 5:21-43), or pausing to dine with tax collectors and sinners (Luke 19:1-10), Jesus never allowed the urgency of His mission to override the value of personal connection.
The story of the bleeding woman is especially poignant. Despite the pressing crowd and the seemingly critical nature of Jairus’ plea, Jesus stopped. He turned and addressed the woman’s faith, giving her not only physical healing but also emotional and spiritual restoration, calling her a daughter of Abraham. He didn’t view her as an interruption but as an individual worthy of His full attention.
In our modern world, filled with endless to-do lists, notifications, and a culture that glorifies busyness, Jesus’ example feels counter-cultural. His ministry reminds us that presence is a gift we can offer to others—a way to add life to our days and theirs. Being present means:
- Listening Without Distraction: Jesus often asked questions and truly listened. When we take the time to focus fully on someone, we affirm their worth and create space for deeper connection.
- Seeing the Individual: In a crowd, Jesus saw Zacchaeus in a tree and invited Himself into his home. He looked beyond the surface and saw the person in need. Do we take the time to see others—really see them?
- Valuing the Moment: Jesus didn’t let the pressure of future events rob Him of the present. He exemplified how to embrace each encounter as meaningful.
Jesus’ ministry teaches us that while we can’t add days to our lives, we can certainly add life to our days, by embodying His unhurried presence:
- Slow Down: Resist the urge to rush. Sometimes the greatest ministry happens in the pauses—a kind word, a shared moment, or a listening ear.
- Prioritize People Over Tasks: Like Jesus, see people as the priority, not interruptions. Recognize the divine opportunities hidden in everyday encounters.
- Be Fully Present: Put away distractions, like your phone. Whether it’s with your family, coworkers, or a stranger, offer them your undivided attention.
Jesus’ ability to walk slowly through the crowd was not a sign of inefficiency but a reflection of divine intentionality. He showed us that being present isn’t about doing more but about loving more. When we embrace this truth, we begin to live fuller lives, marked by connection, compassion, and purpose.
Let’s challenge ourselves to walk like Jesus did—with grace, patience, and an awareness of the sacredness of each moment. In doing so, we participate in the ministry of presence, bringing His love to a hurried and distracted world. I hope this speaks to you, and I pray you have a blessed day!
