Awaken is our theme at GenU in 2025, and it is a powerful proposition that resonates deeply within the human spirit. From the stirring imagery in Ezekiel’s vision of the Valley of Dry Bones to the miraculous story of a man revived by contact with Elisha’s bones, the Bible vividly portrays the life-giving power of God. These stories remind us that no situation is too far gone for the breath of God to revive and restore.
The story in Ezekiel 37:1–14 presents a vivid prophetic vision. Ezekiel is led by the Spirit of the Lord into a valley filled with dry, scattered bones. The image of lifelessness is unmistakable: these bones represent Israel in exile—disconnected, desolate, and devoid of hope. God then asks Ezekiel a profound question:
“Son of man, can these bones live?” (Ezekiel 37:3).
Ezekiel wisely responds, “Sovereign Lord, you alone know.” This response leaves the possibility of life and restoration squarely in God’s hands.
God commands Ezekiel to prophesy over the bones, declaring, “Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord!” (Ezekiel 37:4). As Ezekiel speaks, a miraculous transformation begins: the bones rattle, coming together, and flesh and skin cover them. Yet, they remain lifeless until the breath of God—the ruach, meaning wind, spirit, or breath—fills them.
This vision powerfully demonstrates that true life comes only from God. It’s not enough for the structures or systems to exist; life itself depends on the Spirit.
“This is the sound of dry bones rattling!” as the song “Rattle” by Elevation Worship proclaims, echoing this miraculous scene. It reminds us that God’s power is not limited by human circumstances or the passage of time.
Another remarkable awakening occurs in 2 Kings 13:20–21. After Elisha’s death, his influence doesn’t end with his burial. In an almost surreal event, a man’s body is hastily thrown into Elisha’s tomb during a raid. When the body touches Elisha’s bones, the man revives and stands on his feet.
This story defies natural explanation and underscores a profound spiritual truth: God’s power transcends death. The residual anointing on Elisha’s bones is a vivid symbol of how God’s Spirit operates beyond human limitations.
The connection between this miracle and the Valley of Dry Bones is clear—both testify to God’s ability to bring life where death reigns. They also foreshadow the ultimate resurrection in Christ, who is the resurrection and the life (John 11:25).
Both stories call us to reflect on personal and collective awakenings. What areas of our lives resemble dry bones? What dreams, relationships, or callings seem lifeless and beyond redemption?
The same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead dwells in believers (Romans 8:11). This means that the power of resurrection is not just a past event or a future hope; it’s a present reality. We are called to speak life into dead places through faith, prayer, and obedience.
“Live! Live!” the song “Rattle” boldly proclaims. These words echo the heart of God, who specializes in making all things new (Revelation 21:5). Whether it’s reviving a discouraged heart, restoring broken relationships, or igniting a fresh sense of purpose, God’s power is always at work to bring life.
Ezekiel’s role in the Valley of Dry Bones was not passive. He partnered with God by speaking His word over the lifeless bones. This reminds us of our authority and responsibility as believers. When we align our words with God’s promises, we become instruments of awakening in our world.
What might happen if we began speaking life into the seemingly hopeless areas around us? Just as the bones came together and were filled with breath, our words of faith and declarations of God’s truth can bring transformation.
The Valley of Dry Bones and Elisha’s tomb both point to the ultimate demonstration of God’s power in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Because of His victory over death, we can experience new life today.
The message of awakening is central to the Gospel. Jesus came to awaken our spirits, reconcile us to God, and empower us to live as agents of His kingdom. Just as He called Lazarus from the tomb, He calls us to step out of spiritual slumber and into the abundant life He offers.
The sound of rattling bones is not just a historical event or a prophetic vision. It’s an ongoing reality for those who trust in the Lord. Whatever feels dead in your life, God can breathe new life into it.
Awakening is both a gift and a call. God desires to bring life to our dry bones and use us to awaken others. Let the stories of Ezekiel’s vision and Elisha’s tomb inspire you to believe in the resurrection power of God.
This is the sound of dry bones rattling—a sound that reverberates through time, declaring that our God is still in the business of making all things new. I hope this speaks to you, and I pray you have a blessed day!
