Moses’ encounter with God on Mount Sinai is one of the most awe-inspiring and transformational moments in all of Scripture. As Moses stood in the presence of the Almighty, receiving the Ten Commandments, the mountain shook, thunder roared, and fire fell from heaven (Exodus 19). But beyond the dramatic signs, something even more powerful happened—Moses experienced divine intimacy. He communed with God in a way that shaped not only his life but the destiny of a nation.
It’s easy to think such moments are reserved for biblical heroes. Yet the same God who met Moses on the mountain desires to draw near to us today. While our encounters may not come with smoke and fire, the invitation is no less real: God longs to meet us, speak with us, and transform us through His presence.
1. Prepare to Meet Him
Moses didn’t casually wander up Mount Sinai. In Exodus 19:10–11, God instructed the people to consecrate themselves—to wash, purify, and prepare their hearts. This was no ordinary meeting. It was holy. And holiness still matters.
If we want to draw near to God, we must come with reverence, humility, and readiness. James 4:8 gives a powerful promise: “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” But that nearness begins with our willingness to prepare—by confessing sin, quieting our hearts, and acknowledging His greatness.
Take a few quiet moments each day to pray honestly, admit your need for God, and invite Him to speak. The act of preparing our hearts opens the door for intimacy.
2. Make Space for Encounter
Moses had to climb. He left behind the crowd, noise, and distractions to ascend into God’s presence. In the same way, our lives are often too cluttered to hear from God clearly. We must be intentional about creating space for Him.
Jesus modeled this beautifully. Luke 5:16 tells us, “But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.” Even the Son of God needed solitude with His Father.
When was the last time you unplugged completely—no phone, no agenda—just to spend time with God? Whether it’s a morning walk, a Sabbath rest, or moments before bed, sacred spaces become spiritual mountaintops.
3. Worship in Awe
On Sinai, Moses worshiped. He recognized God’s holiness and majesty, responding with humility and awe. Worship isn’t just singing; it’s a posture of the heart. It’s saying, “God, You are worthy. I surrender.”
Psalm 22:3 says God inhabits the praises of His people. That means when we worship—through song, prayer, or scripture meditation—we create a dwelling place for His presence.
Don’t wait for Sunday. Let your car become a sanctuary. Let your kitchen hum with hymns. Worship opens the heavens and draws us into God’s embrace.
4. Seek His Word Like Treasure
Moses didn’t go to Sinai for a personal high; he went to receive God’s Word. Today, we have something even more remarkable—the complete Word of God in the Bible. Yet how often do we treat it like a quick snack instead of a feast?
2 Timothy 3:16 reminds us: “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.” Open your Bible expecting to hear from God. Ask Him to reveal His heart. Take notes. Meditate on what you read. He will speak.
5. Obey What He Says
Moses didn’t just receive God’s commands—he obeyed them. Intimacy with God requires action. Jesus said in John 14:15, “If you love me, keep my commands.” Love isn’t just expressed in worship or emotion; it’s shown in trust and obedience.
When we obey, we align ourselves with God’s heart. And the reward is nearness. God reveals more of Himself to those who follow His voice.
6. Ask for More of His Glory
One of the boldest prayers in Scripture comes from Moses: “Now show me your glory” (Exodus 33:18). Moses had already experienced God’s presence, yet he wanted more. That hunger is what draws us deeper.
Through prayer, fasting, and a surrendered life, we can experience God’s glory—not just as a concept, but as a reality. The Holy Spirit lives in us. When we invite Him to fill us daily, He illuminates God’s presence in our ordinary lives.
7. Walk with Him Daily
Moses didn’t just meet God once. Exodus 33:11 says, “The Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend.” That’s the invitation we’ve been given—to walk with God not once a week, but moment by moment.
Talk to Him as you go through your day. Invite Him into your work, your worries, your joys. Intimacy with God is not a mountaintop event—it’s a lifelong friendship.
You may never stand on a physical Mount Sinai, but every time you open your heart to God, you ascend into His presence. When you prepare yourself, make space for Him, worship in awe, seek His Word, obey His commands, ask for more, and walk with Him daily—you are climbing your own mountain. And at the summit, you’ll find not just rules or revelations, but a relationship that changes everything.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for inviting me into Your presence, just as You did with Moses. Help me to approach You with reverence and expectancy. Cleanse my heart, quiet my mind, and awaken my spirit to hunger for more of You. Teach me to carve out sacred time, to worship with awe, and to seek Your Word with a fresh passion. Give me the courage to obey even when it’s hard, and the faith to ask boldly for Your glory in my life. May I walk with You daily, hear Your voice clearly, and grow in intimacy with You as a friend. Draw me nearer still, Lord. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
