
Life often brings moments where dreams seem shattered, relationships appear beyond repair, and the future feels uncertain. In such times, resigning ourselves to loss and despair is easy. But the story of Joseph and his father, Israel (Jacob), teaches us that God is always at work, orchestrating plans far greater than we can imagine—even when we can’t see it.
When Joseph was just 17, his life took an unimaginable turn. Betrayed by his brothers, he was sold into slavery and carried away to Egypt. Back home, Jacob believed his beloved son was dead, overwhelmed with grief so deep he declared, “I will continue to mourn until I join my son in the grave” (Genesis 37:35). It seemed as though Jacob’s heartache would last a lifetime, and his hope for joy was gone.
But God wasn’t finished. Over two decades later, in a twist that only the Creator could author, Jacob discovered that Joseph was not only alive but had risen to a position of incredible power in Egypt as its prime minister. This wasn’t just a happy ending—it was a restoration beyond anything Jacob could have dreamed. Not only did he reunite with Joseph, but he also had the privilege of blessing Joseph’s sons, ensuring a legacy of faith and promise for generations.
What Jacob didn’t know during those 22 years of mourning was that God had been working all along. While Jacob was grieving, Joseph was enduring trials, from slavery to imprisonment. Yet through it all, God was positioning Joseph to save not only Egypt but also his entire family from a future famine. What looked like a tragic ending was, in fact, the foundation for an extraordinary comeback.
God does the same in our lives. When doors close, opportunities seem lost, or dreams appear out of reach, it’s not the end of the story. Just because we can’t see what God is doing doesn’t mean He isn’t at work. His plans often unfold in ways we can’t comprehend, but they always exceed what we could hope for.
This story reminds us that God is a God of surprises. Just when Jacob thought his life would be defined by grief, God revealed a breathtaking restoration. The same is true for us. You may have given up on something you’ve prayed about for years—a goal, a dream, or a breakthrough in a challenging situation. You might feel that the door is closed for good.
But God specializes in doing the unexpected. His timing is perfect, and He loves to exceed our expectations. Ephesians 3:20 tells us that God “is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.”
The key is to stay in faith, even when things seem impossible. Trust that God is working behind the scenes. His plans are not limited by our timelines or the obstacles we see. If Jacob could be reunited with his long-lost son, imagine what God can do in your life.
You may feel stuck in a waiting, mourning, or uncertain season, but God’s plans are always in motion. Just as He brought joy back into Jacob’s life when it seemed least likely, He can do the same for you.
If your story isn’t good, it isn’t over. Whatever you’re hoping for, don’t lose heart. God hasn’t forgotten you. He’s still working, still orchestrating, and still writing your story. When His plans unfold, they’ll meet your expectations and exceed them in ways you never imagined. So, hold on. Stay faithful.
